Arthritis 101

So many people have arthritis that it is likely that
someone you know has it. And since there are over 100
different types of arthritis, it can be a confusing
condition to understand and to explain. Basically it causes
pain, stiffness and can cause swelling around the joints.
This makes it very hard or even impossible for the person
to do daily activities.

The second highest cause of worker disability in America,
arthritis appears more frequently in women than in men and
more than 66 million people in the United States -- that's
one person in every three -- is suffering from its effects.

Arthritis Varieties

If you need help or more information on your specific type
of arthritis, a quick web search will bring you plenty of
information in seconds. Be as specific as possible in your
search terms since many conditions are grouped under one
specific name -- and there are more than 100 of these names.

In general, the various kinds of arthritis are classified
according to what part of the body they affect. Luckily,
the majority can be treated to ease the symptoms, such as
aches or sharp pain in joints, difficulty sleeping,
stiffness and more. Help is available for all these
arthritis symptoms.

>From osteoarthritis and juvenile arthritis to rheumatoid
arthritis, gout, and fibromyalgia, early detection and
diagnosis is essential to avoid the crippling effects and
to get the most out of treatment.

Treating Arthritis

Of course, specific treatments depend upon the type and
severity of the arthritis, but for best results, beginning
treatment as early as possible is best, not only for
dealing with pain and discomfort but for slowing the
progression of the disease. Keep track of changes in your
symptoms and consult your physician whenever you have a
question or feel unsure.

Exercise will also help your joints and reduce pain. You
should talk to your doctor about what type of exercise is
safe for you and how often you should exercise. Then you
should create a plan and stick to it. A regular routine
will help you remember to exercise.
