Diet -- Stay Trim Through the Holiday Season

The temptations of the holiday season don't have to mean a
bigger waistline in the new year and yet another resolution
to get in shape. With just a few tricks and tips, you can
keep your weight in check and still celebrate with
everyone.

Before you go

While you might be invited to more parties than usual, you
can do a lot before you even arrive to keep yourself from
eating too much.

One way of keeping your food consumption down is to eat
before you go out. An apple or a large glass of water before
leaving home will keep you away from the dessert cart at the
party.

At the party

But even if you haven't eaten ahead of time, once you're at
the party, you can keep your calories reasonable. One way
to do so is to engage in conversation away from the food
table with a low calorie drink in hand-alcohol can add up
quickly, stick with water or diet colas. Keep your hands
busy enough to make it impossible to hold a plate as well.

If you really must eat, you'll find that the vegetable and
fruit trays can be the best places to fill up your plate.
If you put these items on your plate first and then put
smaller servings of other higher fat items, you'll be able
to have everything without the caloric damage.

When you're being served dinner, you can avoid eating too
much by eating a small bit of everything and leaving half of
the meal on the plate. While some are afraid that they
should eat to compliment the host, you could always say that
you are just too full to eat any more, but what you had was
delicious. Or you could excuse any questions with an
explanation of wanting to watch your weight. Everyone can
understand that.

At home

It is different when you are preparing for the holiday
season, making the food at home. Because you can choose
what's best for your diet. So, you can always create a menu
with low fat, low calorie dishes. After all, you are in
charge!

When cooking, ask a family member to do the tasting. They
will be only too thrilled to do this and you can save
yourself from consuming added calories.

If you like, you could even freeze those wonderful tidbits,
the gloriously home-hither goodies like brownies. It isn't
all that easy to look temptingly at a frozen brownie, and
you will enjoy it all the better with the family or at a
get-together.

With all these precautions, you might just end up losing a
few pounds during the holiday season! Even if that's not
the case, just the fact that you haven't added any extra
weight is something to rejoice about.
